8 Reasons Why We Love Living in an RV

Who in the world would LIVE in an RV? What kind of hairbrained idea comes across a persons mind that would convince them to sell off a perfectly good home and choose to live the hobo live of a full-time RV’er?  Well, we have asked ourselves that question a time or two over the last 3 years and we always come up with the same answer…we just freekin’ LOVE IT!  We have been living in an RV for over three years and we absolutely love it.  We go wherever we feel like going. If we hanker for the beach, well, we go to the beach. If we feel like skiing, we head for the mountains. We can be anywhere we want, and our house is right there with us. So if we feel like a sandwich…well…you get the picture.

Still not convinced, keep reading.

Here are our 8 Reasons why we still love living in an RV

Unschedules your life.

Life becomes very simple when you’re not rushing around trying to get to places.  Instead of spending the weekends cleaning and gardening, we are out exploring the world together.  If the weather is crap- we don’t have to get out of bed if we don’t want to.  Some rainy day’s,  we don’t bother getting dressed.  Instead, we’ll put some movies on and have a nice relaxed day in our PJ’s.  The kids have to do school and we have to get work done, otherwise, we can’t pay for this lifestyle, but we don’t have to BE at a job, the kids don’t have to BE at school at a certain time.  Life is much less scheduled living in our RV.

Chores, what chores.

I used to spend so many hours and days cleaning bathrooms, the kitchen, loading and unloading laundry, there was never anytime for me.  Now, all we need to do is vacuum and mop the floors, this takes all of 15 minutes with all of us working together.  Wipe down the bathroom and kitchen in no time. It is so easy, sometimes I have the kids just do it, so they can earn extra money.  Laundry is probably the biggest issue, as we have to GO to the laundry whether it be in our campground or in the local town. but we even try to make that fun by exploring shops or having an ice cream during the spin cycle.   This way we have so much more time to hang out with the kids, relax and go have fun. Life is easier living in our RV.

Go Where We Want

Imagine a life where you have a hankering to go visit a place and that happens.  I’ve always wanted to visit Glacier National Park and that will happen this summer.  We drove through Utah 2 years ago and returned this summer and spent 2 months enjoying the National Parks and the surrounding areas.  I love waking up at the beach one month and in the mountains the next.  There are so many beautiful areas to visit throughout the US, we are so fortunate that we get to visit as many as we want.  Frank and I have moved several times since getting married.  We tend to have itchy feet and so this lifestyle suits us because we never have time to get bored.  If we do, we just move on. Life is adventurous living in our RV.

Bring your home with you

How many times have you wished for something that is back home sitting on your dresser?  For me, I love a cup of tea first thing in the morning and I HATE having it with powdered milk!  I do enjoy staying in hotels but after a couple of days, I am over it.  Living in an RV means that you can still enjoy the simple things that you miss when you don’t have them – the ability to have a cup of tea when you want to, or a glass of wine.  With kids, staying in a hotel sounds fun but they are always looking for something to eat and you can only bring so many snacks with you.

Yes, I like to eat out, but I don’t want to eat out for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  Staying in a hotel forces you to have to eat out every day/night and after a couple of days, at least for me, that gets boring. There is something to be said for being able to “live” in the most exciting, scenic places AND always have your home right there. Life is never boring living in an RV.

Have Food When Needed

One of the things I love about traveling in an RV is the fact that I can have dinner on the table as soon as we arrive in a place. No need to quickly suss out the local restaurants to see which one is affordable, kid-friendly, etc. “Chez Foley” is always open and has our favorite foods.   When kids are hungry, things start to go wrong, so if flights are delayed or traffic is bad, our timeline is off.  With an RV that doesn’t matter, I always have a cooler full of food, AND I always have something that I pre-made that I can microwave and have dinner on the table 20 minutes after we arrive.  Plus its healthy ? Feeding your family is so much easier living in an RV.

The dog comes too

Our dog is a rescue dog and she hates being left behind.  We think her previous owners moved and left her behind.  Ever since then, she hates when she sees a suitcase,  and does her best to fit inside.  Thankfully now that we have the RV, she doesn’t get left behind she can travel with us, and we don’t have to miss her. Plus we always have the added security of a watchdog on our travels. Dog’s love living in an RV.

Experience more of the outdoors.

In our 3 years of traveling, we tried skiing for the first time, we have ridden horses several times, we tubed down a river in GA, sped down a sand dune in Or, hiked throughout Bryce Canyon National Park and came across a mama bear and her cubs in Smokey Mountain National Park.  The best part about all of this is that we experienced it all together.  I don’t want my kids sitting indoors asking to play video games, I want them outside taking advantage of all this country has to offer.  We love nothing more than getting up early and heading outside for the day. You can really enjoy the great outdoors living in an RV.

Life is SO much better

Mondays don’t mean anything to us anymore, we also don’t have a hump day.  We are basically on vacation every single day and we love that.  Sure things go wrong, life isn’t perfect but it’s a whole lot better when you are sitting outside looking at the Grand Tetons, or The Arches, or enjoying a fire at Smokey Mountains, or watching your kids faces at Disney.  Plus we get to live wherever we want, whenever we want. Life in an RV is GOOD!
