Cooking The Perfect Campsite Pulled Pork Recipe (Make Ahead Or Make Fresh!)

A Delicious Pulled Pork Camping Recipe

Looking for a delicious pulled pork recipe to make while camping? This crock pot camping pulled pork recipe is easy to make and will be loved by all!

All you need is a crock pot, some pork roast, and your favorite seasonings. You can slow cook the pork roast in the crock pot for hours on end, and it will be juicy and flavorful when it’s done. Serve with buns and your favorite sides, and enjoy!

Why We Love Tender Pulled Pork

Pulled pork sandwiches is one of our favorite meals to have on hand. We cook a whole shoulder or loin roast and have enough pork for several meals (moms love this part). There are so many reasons why we love this meat:

  1. Pork is very inexpensive: We find great pork roasts or shoulders almost always for less than $2-$3 per pound. The cheapest cut you can find is just fine.
  2. Pork is versatile: There are so many uses for the shredded meat, from sandwiches to salads, or by itself as a main dish.
  3. It goes a long way: One good sized pork roast will make enough pulled pork for a family of 4 to have several meals.
  4. This is one of the meals our picky daughter will actually eat!

This recipe can be easily made at your campsite, but you can also cook and shred the pork before you go, making it super easy to heat up and dish out while camping. The tender pulled pork is easy to transport, and can be used in so many ways.

This is also a fun recipe to make with the kiddos. Ours love to add the ingredients and then to help pull the pork when it is time. Of course they also LOVE to eat, eat, eat the delicious meat!

Pulled Pork Sandwich

Ingredients

2 lb Pork Shoulder, roast, loin.

1 packet Onion Soup Mix

1/2 Cup of Water

Directions

  1. Remove the pork from the packet and put it in the slow cooker fat side up, put slow cooker on low for 4-6 hours (depending on your slow cooker)
  2. Shake the onion soup mix all over the pork
  3. Pour water gently over pork and put on the lid

How To Make Pulled Pork:

1.  Remove the pork from the slow cooker and let it cool down

2.  Pull it apart using meat claws and going with the grain? Pork should fall apart easily.

3.  Once you have it all pulled apart, throw it in a microwave safe bowl, add some yummy bar-b-que sauce, and it is ready to be served. For our favorite bbq sauce we just combine honey, original bbq sauce, and yellow mustard in a small bowl. Sweet and spicy!

Serve it up:

8 Kaiser rolls

1 8 oz can Baked Beans

1 Red Onion Chopped

1 Carton of Coleslaw

Potato Chips

We prefer chopped onions and coleslaw , but you may want to try your own toppings. Go for it, let us know if you discover something awesome. Sides can include corn on the cob, baked beans, potato salad, etc.

Using The Dutch Oven

If you want to do something really authentic and cook outdoors, try making this recipe in your Dutch oven. The best pulled pork is cooked low and slow so Dutch oven pulled pork will take some time, but the wait is worth it. The result will be amazingly fork tender meat with a wonderful flavor.

There are a lot of different recipes, but this one by Gary House at Cooking Outdoors.com is a favorite. He uses a rub of olive oil, Brown sugar, pepper, chili powder, salt, paprika, cayenne pepper, cumin to coat the pork, and then adds onions, garlic and chilis to the Dutch oven to give a spicy flavor. He then uses dark beer for moisture.

Don’t forget to watch moisture and add beer each hour while you are cooking. Also update the coals every hour.

Dealing With Leftovers

While it is unlikely that you and your family and friends will not devour every bit, you can keep pulled pork in the fridge for several days in an airtight container. Or, if you want to save some for a later date, you can freeze it.

When freezing pulled pork, you want to make sure the meat remains moist, so add any drippings. Shredding the pork in larger chunks will help in freezing as they will hold more juice. You should freeze in a freezer bag, or vacuum sealed bag. The trick is to remove as much air as possible to avoid freezer burn.

Once you are done eating, top it all of with some wonderful campground smores. Pulled pork continues to be one of our family’s favorite go to foods. It is quick, easy and a hit on any camping trip.

      Hi Lauren,

Kind of depends on how high you stack them, but you should feed 6-8 people with a 2 lb pork roast.
