Camping Near Bryce Canyon
Hitch-N-Post is located about 24 miles from the entrance to Bryce Canyon so it was absolutely perfect for us to be situated here. There are other RV Parks near Bryce Canyon but we couldn’t stay for a month and they were A LOT more expensive. You can check them out here if you’re interested. Hitch N Post is located in Panguitch, the closest town to Bryce Canyon.
There is the town of Bryce City just outside the park, but that is more a tourist destination than a town. The campground is conveniently located on historic Highway 89 and just a few blocks from restaurants, shopping, hardware and across the road there is a Family Dollar store. You can access the trails directly from the campground in your ATV or with your horse.
The park isn’t very big, it has about 40 sites. You should have no problem getting your rig in because there are many entrance and exit points. As it sits right in town, we wondered about road noise, but we were a little back from the road and we never noticed any noise at all.
The sites aren’t terribly large but we are a 38′ open range roamer and we fit fine. There is an area where the sites are back to back, so Randy basically puts the larger rigs through 2 sites so they can fit. Side by side it is a little tighter. This was in April so it wasn’t terribly busy just yet, we didn’t have a regular neighbor, we did have some people that stayed for a few days but no big deal.
All RV sites are full hookups, and the entire place is gravel and very flat/ level. The park is kept in nice shape and the area is dragged pretty often to keep from getting any ruts in the driving areas. Each site has a picnic table, the tables are a tad old but they do fine.
This isn’t a fancy park by any means but it is maintained well and at $500 for the month including electric, the price was definitely right.
Owner Hospitality
Randy the owner was extremely friendly when we checked in and gave us great information about the area and what we should go see. I loved the fact that he had menus for the local restaurants and he gave us his recommendations. He also had some DVD’s for rent with a small donation. I think this was a great idea because they didn’t have cable tv as such, just whatever came in over the air. I know some people have to have their tv but for us, it doesn’t matter. We were there to see Bryce Canyon National Park so no tv didn’t bother us at all.
As an owner, Randy is an affable guy but is quite fastidious about his rules. He is not beyond shelling out a bit of a lecture if he feels you are on the wrong side of them. It is kind of a shame when otherwise good owners allow a few bad eggs to color their perceptions of everyone else. I think that is the case here. After a couple of “rules” run-ins, we had to have words with Randy, but he handled the situation fairly well.
We unfortunately ended up with the feeling that we were being watched all of the time. With 2 small kids in a small park with no place to play, that can be a little uncomfortable. Hopefully Randy will come to understand that when you treat ALL of your guests through the lens of the few bad actors, you leave good people with a less than positive feeling about their experience in your park.
RV Amenities
For those of who are looking to tent camp or need the use of the bathroom, the bathroom facilities were fine, I’ve seen cleaner but I’ve also seen dirtier. The tent sites are very nice (grass) and surround a community style fire pit and game room/ clubhouse.
They have a nice laundry facility with several machines for different size clothing, which you don’t see very often. This was kept very clean, they have a change box for quarters which is nice so you don’t run out. They don’t have a place to hang clothes but they do have a very long table to sort your clothes and it’s not too expensive. I think each load might have cost $2.25 or something close to that.
The laundry is kept very clean, in fact, Randy runs through it several times per day checking machines and cleaning up. He has what I will call a STRONG preference for you to stay in the laundry room while your clothes are running.
Things To Do In Panguitch.
Panguitch is not a big town, not much around but you can wander up and down and take a look at the various stores and restaurants. They have some history there and have put in neat signposts along the sidewalks showing historical photos and stories about the buildings you are looking at.
Places of Interest:
Our favorite restaurant was the Big Fish Family Resturant on the edge of town. Funny name you would think, for a restaurant in the deserts of Utah, but it makes sense when you realize that there are several lakes in the area known for large rainbow trout.
The town’s name itself is the Paiute word meaning “Big Fish.” Funny enough, this restaurant is known for its awesome burgers. Ask around town and they will tell you. I wonder what the Paiute word for “Big Yummy Burger” is? There is also a really nice salad bar which our kids LOVED! All in all a great meal and a great value! A giant burger and fries will cost you $7.99 – 10.99 so great value!
There are other restaurants in the area but we didn’t eat at any of those. We did order a pizza from the local spot, but it was just ok. You can read reviews on them at Trip Advisor here.
Be advised that just about everything in this town is closed on Sunday – grocery stores, restaurants. Thankfully we found this out early on through a park ranger so we were prepared.
There is a local grocery store but as is typical in towns close to major attractions the food is quite expensive so we don’t even bother shopping there. Walmart is over an hour away. When we are staying somewhere for a month, we will take a day and drive to Walmart or Sams Club (if there is one) to do enough shopping for a month. We did the same thing in Panguitch, it wasn’t too bad a trip, the views are pretty awesome all around.
All in all, we enjoyed Panguitch and Hitch N Post Rv Park. We went there to explore Bryce Canyon and all it has to offer and we did! The location is fantastic, so we were able to visit Bryce Canyon several times per week and really see the park well. You can read about our favorite hikes and things to do here . Well, you seem very fair in your review (“ seen worse and better”) But I am afraid that “Randy” made the pass decision for me. I do follow rules, but the idea that he made you feel watched. And you had to talk, even if he managed it well, sounds like I don’t want to camp a month with him.
