50+ Incredible Backpacking Meal Recipes (Simple and Tasty)

Backpacking meal recipes can provide a great way to stay nourished and energized while out in nature. Whether you’re planning a multi-day camping trip or just an afternoon hike, having tasty backpacking meal recipes can make all the difference in having a successful excursion.

With the right ingredients and gear, you can create delicious meals that are easy and convenient to prepare with this collection of backpacking recipes. Backpacking meal recipes offer nutritious, lightweight options that will keep you satisfied throughout your journey. You can make your own meals and you don’t have to rely on pre-packaged freeze dried meals.

How Much Food Do You Need For Backpacking

When planning a backpacking trip, figuring out the amount of food you need to bring can be daunting. In order to ensure you have enough calories and nutrition for your hike, it is important to consider the terrain, weather conditions, length of the trek, and the number of people in your party.

Knowing what trail meals to bring on a backpacking trip is essential for an enjoyable and safe outdoor experience.

Dehydrating Backpacking Food

Dehydrated meals are an easy and efficient way to reduce weight and bulk when packing for a long journey. The method involves removing most of the moisture from food with a food dehydrator, which leaves behind just the essential nutrients, vitamins, and minerals.

You can store dehydrated foods for months or even years without spoiling it, making it ideal for lengthy backpacking trips.

To dehydrate your own food at home, first choose a food dehydrator that suits your needs. Most models have temperature settings and removable trays to accommodate different items. Once you have chosen a model, prepare your ingredients by washing and cutting them into small pieces of similar sizes (around 1/4 inch). For best results always use fresh veggies, fruits and meats.

Place the pieces onto the trays in a single layer so they dehydrate evenly. Set the temperature to between 135-145 degrees Fahrenheit, depending on what you’re drying, and let it run until all pieces are dry and leathery – usually 8-12 hours for dried fruits and dried vegetables or up to 18 hours for meats.

Once finished, store your dried ingredients in airtight containers in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight for future use.

Dehydrated Food Recipes

When rehydrating dehydrated food on the trail, make sure that you cover it with enough water to submerge all of the ingredients thoroughly. Depending on what type of food you are dealing with, it may take between 30 minutes – 4+ hours to rehydrate fully.

Consuming all rehydrated foods within one hour is essential due to potential bacterial growth in standing water. For optimal nutrition while on the go, adding hot or cold broth or boiled water will add flavor and additional vitamins and minerals lost during dehydration.

Don’t forget your pot cozy! A pot cozy aids in the rehydration process. Check out these dehydrated food recipes for your next backpacking meal! They are simple, but go far beyond the typical dehydrated veggies.

No meat? No gluten? No problem! These cowboy breakfast foil packs are super easy to make, and can give your campers everything they need to sustain them for the day. With a ton of protein inside, you may even want to make these at home! Which isn’t a bad idea for backyard camping…

Equipment You Should Bring

When planning backpacking meals, it’s important to bring the right equipment. This includes a lightweight camping stove, fuel, and pot cozy; these items should be as light as possible (saving room for food weight) without compromising on quality.

Another must-have item is a spatula – one that is heat resistant and non-stick is ideal. Utensils such as forks and spoons are also essential, and if you’re looking to cut down on weight, it can be beneficial to invest in titanium or plastic utensils that weigh less than metal ones.

For food storage and meal preparation, containers such as Tupperware or reusable bowls are handy for packing meals into your bag and ensure a longer shelf life of what’s inside.

Depending on the length of your trip, you may want to bring a cooler so you can keep perishables cold; collapsible coolers are available, which are much more lightweight than traditional coolers. You’ll also want to bring specific coolers for your cooking-designated hot or cold water.

A sharp knife also comes in handy for meal prep; some models come with foldable blades which make them even easier to transport. Finally, don’t forget about rehydration supplies – cold water bottles and hydration bladders will save you from carrying around large jugs of water, while electrolyte sachets are great for staying hydrated during hot days out in the wilderness.

With this equipment in tow, you’ll be well-equipped to enjoy delicious backpacking meals! Just remember the recommended pack weight rule!

When it comes to backpacking, your pack should never weigh more than a fifth of you! This rule helps ensure that no matter how far the journey takes you, both your body and backpack arrive in good health.

How to Clean Up After Meals On The Trail

Cleanup after a backpacking meal doesn’t have to be overly complicated. Start by disposing of any trash or leftovers that you don’t want to take with you, such as packaging and food scraps. It is important to ensure that all debris is removed so wildlife can’t access it and get sick from eating it.

If there’s an available bear-proof trash receptacle, use it; otherwise, simply pack the trash out with you. Then, if you are in a designated camping area, bury organic waste at least 6 inches deep and about 200 feet away from sources of water.

For dishes and cookware, use biodegradable soap if available ( it often is at your local grocery store) – otherwise use a tiny amount of regular dish soap, making sure that all soapy residue is washed away with plenty of hot water. Allow the items to air dry before packing them away for your journey ahead.

Finally, remember to always leave no trace behind – even the smallest pieces of debris can be harmful to the environment if not properly disposed of!
